29.5 cubic feet; 30 archives boxes
This accession consists of materials documenting research by Environmental and Molecular Toxicology Professor George Bailey and various OSU faculty, graduate students, and postdoctoral students working under his direction. The overall focus of the research is the study of dietary cancer prevention agents and how their mechanisms of action react in trout to the carcinogens of Aflatoxin B1 and Dibenzo(a,l,)pyrene (DBP). The agents examined in this research for their preventative properties are chlorophylls (more specifically, chlorophyllin) and indoles. Research on zebrafish is also reflected in these records. In addition to laboratory notebooks, this transfer also includes correspondence, drafts of articles, manuals, photographic images, reference materials, research data, and theses. The notebooks contain a combination of research data, procedures for lab experimentation (such as PCR), and reference materials. The data includes sequenced gels containing DNA information. Mostly containing microscopic views of trout specimens under study and chlorophyll, the 207 photographic slides also depict research data charted/graphed, and lab researchers at work. In the inventory, box contents are listed with the name of researcher, types of materials, and the subject matter of the research, with notebook or file titles in quotes. Aflatoxin research pre-dating Bailey's arrival in 1979 can be found in this transfer in the notebooks of Patricia Loveland, Norman E. Pawlowski, and David Jones.
Coming to OSU in 1979 to assume a post as assistant professor in the Department of Food Science and Technology, George Bailey researched the role of dietary phtyochemicals in inhibiting cancer growth using both trout and human models. Continuing studies that had began at OSU in the 1960s with the carcinogen aflatoxin and rainbow trout, Bailey's major contribution to the research was the discovery that chlorophyllin acts to inhibit aflatoxin uptake in the body. In addition to serving as director of the of the OSU Marine and Freshwater Biomedical Sciences Center from 1985 to 2002, Bailey sat on the faculty advisory committee that helped to establish the Linus Pauling Institute at OSU in 1996. Recognized for his service to the university, Bailey was honored with the title of Distinguished Professor in the Department of Environmental and Molecular Toxicology in 1998. He retired in 2008.

This accession is made up of materials collected by Alumnus Frank Roehr that reflect his participation in the Kappa Theta Rho Fraternity (later incorporated as a chapter of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity) and includes two petition reports, a photograph, and a certificate. Presented to the national office and various chapters of the Beta Theta Pi Fraternity with the hope that "our alumni be made eligible for initiation", the petitions describe the membership, history, traditions, financial situation, and residence of Kappa Theta Rho. The petitions also describe Greek life at Oregon Agricultural College as well as the college's academic programs, campus grounds, and other student organizations. Portrait shots of Roehr are featured in the photograph and the 1921 petition. The certificate of appreciation was presented to Roehr in 1965 by the Gamma Mu Alumni Association of Beta Theta Pi.
Kappa Theta Rho organized in 1914. In 1923, the house was granted affiliation with Beta Theta Phi as the Gamma Mu chapter. Frank Roehr graduated in 1922 with a degree in mechanical engineering.
