September 1 Update for the Borrowing & Information Desk Project

This week we completed the new desk setup on one of the four new service desks so staff could try it out. We look forward to unveiling the setup in 2 weeks. The last of the big furniture (credenza shelving) went into the LEAD workspace today. Next week we focus on getting staff project spaces set up, and then we're ready to move back to the renovated space.

Speaking of moving, the library will be closed the week of September 11 (9/11 - 9/15) while we do that move. Lobby services will be available that week (noon-5pm, M-F) if you are picking up or dropping off library materials.

We reopen on Monday, September 18, providing services at the new desks. To help us celebrate the completion of this big project, we hope you'll stop in for the Grand Reopening festivities on September 28th from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m.

August 25 Update for the Borrowing & Information Desk Project

Last week's update posting was skipped due to a much-needed vacation. I'm refreshed AND the new desk area is also looking much refreshed! The slatwall went up last week, giving LEAD staff a very flexible way to store items that we circulate from our Library of Things. Almost all of the infrastructure work is completed, so now we're focusing on where the furniture pieces go for optimal service delivery. Before we open the desk area back to the public the week of September 18, the carpet in the front of the space will get a much-needed cleaning. It won't look new, but it will look better!

With noise and active construction activity winding down, just a quick reminder that we still have one big push coming up to get all of our things and furniture back into the space. The library will be closed the week of September 11 (9/11 - 9/15) while we do that move. Lobby services will be available that week (noon-5pm, M-F) if you are picking up or dropping off library materials.

Another event to mark on your calendar is the Grand Reopening to celebrate all the work completed on the main floor this summer. It is scheduled for September 28th from 4:30 to 6:00 p.m. We hope you'll stop in and visit us that day.

August 11 Update for the Borrowing & Information Desk Project

There was so much visible work completed this week in the desk alcove! The plastic draping separating the LEAD area from desk space came down first thing Monday morning, and the space looks huge. Carpet over the power raceway was finished, shelving came down in one area and went up in the front, and the desks arrived and were deployed. Other than some cleanup and tweaks the space is very close to being set up. Next week expect further refinement as service station computers are set up, non-essential items move out, and clean-up continues. It's really exciting to see the space shaping up and looking like an actual service area!

As always, there will be some noise and activity in/around the project zone for the remainder of the summer. Your patience is appreciated.

With project completion coming right up, it is time to share that the library will be closed the week of September 11 (9/11 - 9/15) while we move into the refreshed space. Lobby services will be available that week (noon-5pm,, M-F) if you are picking up or dropping off library materials.

August 3 Update for the Borrowing & Information Desk Project

So much progress has happened in the past two weeks! This week we got lights! Now we can clearly see the wonderful progress on the renovated LEAD service area space. The drywall work is done, and the space has fresh paint, repaired carpet, lots of new network ports, more power outlets, and under-carpet power is going in to support the new desks. The new desks will arrive soon.

The electricians have completed work on the Learning Commons project to support the move of the printers and scanners closer to the front of the space. Soon it will be so much easier for students to identify where to print!

Over the coming weeks we'll be moving in some furniture and shelving to begin getting the space ready to provide service. Exciting work ahead!

Just a reminder that there will be some noise and activity in/around the project zone for the remainder of the summer. Your patience is appreciated

July 21 Update for the Borrowing & Information Desk Project

This week saw some great infrastructure progress in both the main service area for the Borrowing & Information desk project. Painting was started on the completed drywall (fresh paint makes everything look so much better and brighter), all electrical work was completed, and data port and cabling work began.

Next week we hope to see new lighting installed and will see the beginnings of carpet patching taking place. The space is really shaping up. We can't wait to show you!

Just a reminder that there will be some noise and activity in/around the project zone for the remainder of the summer. Your patience is appreciated

July 14 Update for the Borrowing & Information Desk Project

This week, ceiling and electrical work continued for the Borrowing & Information desk project. Even more storage was added, with new cabinetry installed in the 3D printing area. LEAD staff are working out final floor plans and item storage arrangements for the main service area so that we can provide timely and efficient patron services from the new space starting in mid-September.

The related project in the Learning Commons to relocate the printers and high desks for stand-up computers and quick-print stations is really showing progress now. Hopefully next week we can move some printers/scanners/computers to their new homes.

Just a reminder that there will be some noise and activity in/around the project zone for the remainder of the summer. Your patience is appreciated!

July 7 Update for the Borrowing & Information Desk Project

This week the Borrowing & Information desk project work was all about ceilings and lighting and electrical. The old circle lights are being removed and the new power pole and boxes for switches and outlets were installed.  The ceiling has holes right now but it will be patched and painted next week. After the wall and ceiling repairs, the new lights will be next.

This week we got an even better look at how much storage space we're going to have for printer supplies and paper.  The second half of the storage cabinets are in mid-installation. These double-stacked cabinets are on the inside bays of what used to be the ends of the half-wall across from the Avenue elevators.

Just a reminder that there will be some noise and activity in/around the project zone for the remainder of the summer. Your patience is appreciated!

June 30 Update

Today marks our first full week of providing services from a single service point - the Borrowing & Information Desk. It was a week of learning for all, but overall, it went very well. We’re grateful to have this summer period to settle into new routines and practice being better together.

In other project news, it was noisy Monday and Tuesday in the early morning hours when the half-wall with cabinets across from the main floor elevator was demolished and the Circulation Desk was removed!  The ceiling in the future Borrowing & Information desk alcove was cut away to make way for electrical work on new connections and lighting. That wraps up the demolition phase of the project and wow, did those things open up spaces. But don’t worry, we have plans for repurposing that space.

The relocated community patron computers were hooked back up to power and data and are now operational. More power and data work continued so that the printers can be relocated to their new home closer to the entry of the Learning Commons in the coming weeks.

Just a reminder that there will be some noise and activity in/around the project zone for the remainder of the summer. Your patience is appreciated!

June 23 Update

The temporary LEAD desks are now set up in the Learning Commons, so we'll be providing integrated Circulation and Information services from there for the remainder of the summer. We reopen for services, along with space and collection access beginning tomorrow, Saturday, June 24 with our summer hours.

The service area currently occupied by the Circulation desk is ready for the demolition/construction work that will begin on Monday, June 26. The Circulation Desk will be removed and the space renovated to support integrated service delivery in fall. There will be some noise and activity in that space for the remainder of the summer.

June 21 Update:

The library is closed this week (carry-out service in lobby only, 12pm - 5pm through Friday) while we work on setting up the temporary service desk at the entry to the Learning Commons. The (former) Circulation Desk area is now draped off with plastic sheeting, the old desk is cleaned out, staff are moving supplies and equipment over to the temporary service desk area, electrical and telecom staff are onsite and begining their work, and informational and directional signage is in place. Tomorrow (Thursday) the movers arrive and begin the heavy work of moving some furniture to temporary spaces and taking away other pieces of furniture that are no longer needed.

We will reopen to the public on Saturday, June 24 at 1:00pm, providing services from our temporary summer service desk.

The Valley Library Circulation and Info Desks Combining! We're making it easier for you to get the library services you need...all in one place! Beginning in Fall 2023, all borrowing and information services will be available from a combined service point close to the library main entrance. While we get our space ready to offer you single-stop services, visit us all summer at the entry to the Learning Commons as we practice being "better together"!"
