Changes at Guin, upcoming events, and winter workshops.
The Guin library is in the process of replacing their circulation desk. Much in the same way that Valley replaced our Information desk, Guin is undergoing a similar transformation. If you were to come in today, this would be the site you would see.
Soon enough the old desk will be gone, and a smaller desk will replace it.
Now that winter is officially here, remember to keep an eye on the weather before heading in to work. Here’s the link to the inclement weather site that outlines the policy, time reporting, and where to look for announcements of closures.
The University Food Drive is coming up next week. If you haven’t had a chance to fill out the Qualtrics Survey to indicate the type of events you would like to participate in, please do so soon!
Join panelists Cedric Hayden, Janet Bauer, and Sara Gelser for a discussion of Measure 101 on January 11th from 7-8:45 p.m. at the Corvallis-Benton County Public Library. Measure 101 is the healthcare provider assessments to fund Medicaid and stabilize individual insurance premiums, and the special election is January 23rd.
Take a look at the university’s art exhibit, with artwork from some of your fellow co-workers! The exhibit will last until January 28th, and there will be a reception this Thursday from 5-7 p.m. at the LaSells Stewart Center.
The OSU Business Affairs Travel Webpage has been updated, and there are some new travel reimbursement rates out there. The new mileage rate is .545 cents a mile, and the lodging per diem rate has been raised.
Do you need a webcam for a meeting or an iPad for an outreach event? We have a selection of technology for you to check out including webcams, a variety of adapters, a headset, mini-projectors and much more. We also have access to Lynda.com where you can find a plethora of training videos. Go to the OSULP Faculty-Staff Equipment for Check-Out wiki for details on how to reserve and check out this equipment or watch the videos. Emily Drew will join OSU to host a workshop titled: Whitetopia to Northwest Nice: Understanding the Effects of Oregon’s Racial History. In this workshop, participants will examine how Oregon’s history has shaped a specific set of challenges for Oregon’s institutions and communities today. This exciting workshop is scheduled for Friday January 19th, 2018 from 9:00am – 12:00pm and will take place at the Benton County Sunset Building, 4077 SW Research Way, Corvallis, OR 97333. Check-in will open at 8:30am and will be accompanied by a light coffee service. Sign up online now.
Winter workshops: Winter-term training workshops for employees, presented by the Center for Training & Organizational Development, are open for registration. Resource Sharing/CM Unit Manager – Laura Ramos will start in this position on January 29th.
Circulation LT2 – The search is closed, and currently has 26 applicants. The committee is working on whittling that number down.

Can you guess the animal’s person?
We have a two-for-one deal this week. These doggos are Olive (left) and Fawzy (right). They are fierce guard dogs… Fawzy makes sure that everyone knows when something exciting is happening on his watch. Don’t let Olive’s cuteness deceive you, her kisses and shin punches are endless when she is either hungry or needs to go outside. Luckily for their people, these guard dogs need inordinate amounts of sleep and time to catch up on worldly news and Car Talk on OPB radio.
Answers can be shared with colleagues and guessed among the office. Next week’s newsletter will have the owner’s name. Last week’s pet was Steve Van Tyle’s doggo, Mrs. Peterson.
This is a time of reflection for me! 2017 was a challenge for me, the challenges were both good and bad. I have been exploring how my thinking plays a big role in how I meet challenges. We all do big jobs at OSULP and we face challenges keeping up with the demands to provide resources and services that meet the needs of stakeholders both internal and external. Why is it that the things that stick in our minds are the challenges and not our successes? Alison Ledgerwood, a social psychologist shares her research in this TED video entitled “Getting stuck in the negatives (and how to get unstuck)”.
