Gyotaku, solar panels and flying cats
Gyotaku: The Rest of the Story
A skilled and creative practitioner of the Japanese art of Gyotaku (fish rubbing), artist Bruce Koike has always been drawn to the aquatic environment. Since 1985, he has printed over 150 different species of aquatic animals using this traditional Japanese art form. Koike is a self-taught artist whose compositions are unique in that they depict fish behaviors or habitat as well as physical details of the specimen.
The prints are compelling and beautiful, but the backstories describing how and where the artist got the actual specimens turns out to be equally fascinating. In this exhibit, Koike describes how he acquired these specimens. Focusing on his stories of acquisition deepens our understanding of the full process and commitment required by an artist to create a Gyotaku print.

Social Justice Education Initiative training in March
The Social Justice Education Initiative for faculty and staff at Oregon State University is an invitation to begin, or continue, your social justice and equity journey. With humor, empathy, and expertise we will engage in a self-reflective process that helps us answer these important questions: What is the story of the current context in Oregon -- and how did we get here? How do you locate yourseld in this story? Why does social justice matter? The phrase "more curiosity, less judgment" is instrumental to social justice and equity work and is a guiding principle for this interactive workshop. No preparation is needed beyond this principle.
Sign up for SJEI sessions 1 and 2 here. Upcoming sessions held on March 20th and 22nd.

“Public libraries have been a mainstay of my life. They represent an individual's right to acquire knowledge; they are the sinews that bind civilized societies the world over. Without libraries, I would be a pauper, intellectually and spiritually.”
— James Michener
Can you guess the cat’s person?
Mr. Furley – This is Mr. Furley – a.k.a. Fur, Mister, or simply Don Knotts. He is the king of the prance and high-pitched meows when he wants attention. The neighborhood cat, Benny, often knocks at the door to ask to play. He loves to annoy the birds (sometimes bringing live ones in the house!) and always sleeps as though he is flying in his dreams.
Answers can be shared with colleagues and guessed among the office. Next week’s newsletter will have the owner’s name. Lise Hull belongs to last week’s pet, Hermione.
