OSU Library faculty members Anne-Marie Deitering, the Franklin McEdward Professor for
Undergraduate Learning Initiatives, and Hannah Rempel received an L. L Stewart Faculty
Development Award in January 2014 to complement the Orbis Cascade Alliance Professional
Development Award they received in fall 2013. Both awards support their project to collaborate
with other Oregon librarians to build an open online course for basic research skills instruction.
Richard Sapon-White, OSU Libraries’ head of Cataloging and Metadata Services, received a
Fulbright Grant to visit and live in Warsaw, Poland during 2012-2013. Sapon-White taught library
science courses at the University of Warsaw and lectured throughout Poland and the Czech
Republic.
Director of Emerging Technology and Services Department, Evviva Weinraub, led an OSU Libraries
team in a partnership with Maria’s Libraries, an NGO in Rural Kenya. This partnership sought to
provide users the ability to crowdsource translations of folk tales and existing children’s books
into a variety of African languages, sub-languages, and dialects. The OSU team delivered a proof-
of-concept tool that has the opportunity to promote technology exploration, improve early
childhood literacy, change the way we approach foreign language learning, and to provide
opportunities for cost-effective, multi-language publishing.
