Project of the year, new impact report, and updates at Guin library.
The Finley/Bohlman digitization project undertaken in 2016-17 by SCARC and the Oregon Historical Society is the winner of the State Library's inaugural LSTA Project of the Year Award!
The project will be honored at the opening reception of the Finley/Bohlman Catching Birds with a Camera exhibit on February 22.
The new impact report for the Libraries and Press is now available online. We know that the Libraries and Press do a wide array of amazing stuff, and an Impact Report is compiled each year that offers highlights of the work that we do and summarizes the amazing accomplishments of the previous year.
In addition to scintillating facts and figures and an overview of some of the many accomplishments of Libraries and Press faculty and staff, there’s also some cool quotes about libraries. Here’s one:
“Libraries are reservoirs of strength, grace and wit, reminders of order, calm and continuity, lakes of mental energy....In any library in the world, I am at home, unselfconscious, still and absorbed.” — Germaine Greer
Like that one? Here’s one more:
“In Syria, more than 14,000 books from damaged homes have been collected in a secret location by people who fear the books will be destroyed by the government of President Bashar al-Assad. People risk their lives to reach the underground shelter. One user told the BBC, ‘In a sense the library gave me back my life...I would say that just like the body needs food, the soul needs books.’” — from the Eugene Register-Guard, April 11, 2017
The Impact Report was written by Faye Chadwell and Daniel Moret and designed by Daniel Moret and Graphic Design Intern Phoenix Thomas. You can read the new Impact Report for the Libraries and Press online.
See art and science collide when Jorge Cham, the creator of PHD Comics, shares his humorous and thought-provoking perspectives on closing the scientific communications gap. Join the College of Engineering for Jorge Cham’s talk called “The Science Gap” on Feb. 8 at 9 a.m. at the LaSells Stewart Center.
The circ desk detritus in Guin has been removed! Electrical work is supposed to happen next week so we can get the circ computer back up and running normally. We were able to relocate the self-checkout machine so it’s usable. Mary is anxiously waiting for notification of when the new furniture will arrive. There is a big donor reception in Guin library on March 15th (MSI Building groundbreaking). It will be a good test of our expanded floor space.
This week starts the first series of the Library and Press’ strategic planning meetings. Each department is signed up for a meeting, with the list below. Please take a look at the information that Kerri e-mailed out prior to the meeting, and sign up for the open sessions here.

Can you guess the animal’s person?
This is Lilly.
Lilly the pup, aka Lilly 3 fingers, is an excellent soccer player. If you want to get on her good side, then just give her a carrot.
Answers can be shared with colleagues and guessed among the office. Next week’s newsletter will have the owner’s name. Last week’s pet was Lori Hilterbrand’s cat, Dusty.
Had a wonderful time - glad to be back!
